Missouri State TT Report
8-1-09
-Steve Wathke

This was one of those last minute deals. Dennis and I had just got done doing the Gardner TT on Thursday night and we were talking with Craig Henwood from SKC racing and he was asking if we wanted to go down and do Missouri State TT. In the end I decided I would meet Craig in KC and ride down with him.
It was a fun trip and we left feeling like we represented Kansas pretty well. Craig got 4th in the Cat 3's and I got 5th in the Cat 3's. His Son Joey was first in the 15-16 yr. old juniors. I let him use my disc and front wheel and I think that really motivated him.
The course was supposed to be 24.8 miles long. It actually was 25.5 miles long. The event promoter admitted he measured it in his Acura. He even seemed kind of proud of that. ??? The average speeds are wrong on the results becuase of this error.
It rained during the TT and that made for some fun riding. You really had to try to find the high spots in the road to stay out of the sudsy water. It looked like someone poured detergent all over the course.
I rode strong but after it was over I thought I should've done more but I think that's what we all think at the end of every race. I almost average 26 mph for the course and caught my minute man and 2 other guys who were ahead of him. I believe this was a personal best for me. 57:40
Excellent course!! Super flat too. I would highly recommend  it if you are wanting to go out of state and do a TT next year that this would be the one to do.

Master's National Championship report
-Dennis Weinbeck
7/4/09

I finally got to experiance a big race venue. I raced Wednesday in the National TT Championship in Taylorsville Ky. I drove down there Tuesday, I satyed in Shelbyville, a small town 14 miles from the course. I checked in around 4pm, then it was off to Taylorsville to preride the course. When I arrived I looked at the start, all I could see was a big massive uphill, it definately was not a roller it was a climb. I prerode the course on my trek 2300 with aero bars, my warmup bike. When I got on the course the climb was tough but not as tough as it looked, you could big ring it all the way. The start was the hardest, the first mile was around 4% then the next mile was 2% after that it was rollers, big rollers. Also the highway had 2 lanes going both directions, the east bound lanes were going to be shut down just for the race.

After I ran the course I decided to go into Downtown Louisville to get my race packet, and have my bike checked on the jig to make sure that it was legal. When I arrived at the Gault House I saw Pat Bunch and Chuck Procner, previous Monday night tt competitiors. I got in line a long line at the jig, I noticed that not many bikes were passing inspections. So they had to do the morphological test. This really made the wait a lot longer. While waiting in line Andy Chocha stopped to talk, I told him that I still hadn't gotten my race packet he told me he would hold my spot in line with my bike and to go check in. It really is great having all these friends helping out. Finally when they put my bike on jig it passed with about 1/4 inch to spare on both measurements. I really was amazed at how many people that I knew in Louisville, I ran into Steve Autcherloni in the parking garage.

Okay the day is here, the day that i was anxiously waiting for. When I arrived I couldn't believe all the teams with logo covered vehicles. The guy parked next to me was wearing a rainbow jersey. Ex world champ. We were already off to a bad start, the start times were moved back 1 hour. My start time was origionally 9:53 it really didn't affect me, but it did the early starters like Craig Henwood, they were already warming up. I decided to check out the start line, it was a starting ramp, just like the ones that you see the pros use. It even had the same count down, 3 short beeps then a longer one to say go. I was told whatever you do, do not hammer the ramp. Just roll down then hammer, last year a guy hammered the ramp and broke his collar bone. When you first hit the ramp your pedals want to hit it also. Okay it is almost race time, people are warming up, then an announcment, another 1 hour delay. They were having trouble shutting the course down and getting all corner marshalls in place. So now my time is put back to 11:53. Officiol start time of first racer was 10am, youngest to oldest. the distance was 25.8k. My age group had the biggest field 54 racers.

Finally, the race is on, the guy parked next to me with the rainbow jersey was already back, he told me he ran a 29:20. I am thinking to myself that is crazy. He ended up with the overall fastest time. I finally start warming up on trainer 1 hour before my start time, I really feel pretty good for getting no sleep. I show up to the line 7 minutes early knowing that i have to put my bike on jig once again. I get there and there is a huge line, the officiols finally move me and my 30 second man to the front. It is not the jig test that slows the process it is the morphological test. So I pass the jig, I get on the starting platform only to see my 30 second man leave the line. All of a sudden my computer refuses to work, the holder is holding me I am fumbling with the computer, no luck. Next thing I know I hear beep beep beep, here I go, screw the computer.I didn't look at my heart rate at starting line but i bet it was in the 130's. I am on the climb, big tailwind for help. The whole time I am marking my 30 second man. Next thing my 30 second man is gone, so I just keep riding my ride still wondering how he had gotten away so quickly. Right before the turn I catch my first man, I knew it wasn't my 30 second man, he was # 555. After the turn it had gotten really hard a very hard headwnd long uphill. I am still in my big ring, but am going only about 17mph. I kept waiting for someone to blow by me, then all of a sudden I start closing in on another rider, I could tell that he was blown, I caught him and passed him, not my 30 second man. At this time I couldn't wait for the last 2 miles downhill, I finallg get to it but still can't get big speed. The wind is really strong. I finally see the finish, you finish in a chute, as soon as you cross the line you name is announced and your time is given. I had a 33:59 only good for 20th place. I wasn't to pleased with my time, it was all I had that day. Even though I wasn't happy with my time I enjoyed every minute of it. The experiance was worth the drive and money. There is one big thing that I would do different, I would get there 1 day earlier, with driving 700 miles and then rushing to get everything done I was so wired, that I just couldn't sleep at all the night before. Oh about my 30 second man, he must have abandoned, in the results it shows he didn't start. He did start, I saw him start.

( Great report!- sometimes it's not always about the results but about the experience!-steve wathke)
